Access to Information Act (ATIP) in Canada

We know some of our members are interested in obtaining all their records from government sources, especially those who immigrated to Canada.

To submit a request under the Access to Information Act (ATIP) in Canada, follow these steps:

Identify the institution: Determine which government institution holds the records you’re seeking. This could be a federal department, agency, or Crown corporation, or a provincial or territorial government institution.Use the ATIP Online Request service: The Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) Online Request service is a convenient way to submit a request. This service allows you to make online requests to participating government institutions instead of printing, scanning, mailing, or emailing a paper form.
  1. Specify the records: Clearly describe the records you’re seeking, including:
  2. The type of information (e.g., documents, emails, datasets)
  3. The specific dates or time periods relevant to the records
  4. The names of individuals or organizations involved
  5. Avoid asking questions: Instead of asking questions, request specific records. For example, “I am seeking access to purchase receipts for Toronto streetcar video surveillance cameras” rather than “Do Toronto streetcars have surveillance cameras?”
  6. Check for online availability: Before submitting a request, check if the information you’re seeking is already publicly available online.
  7. Contact the institution’s FOI coordinator: If you’re unsure about the request process or need assistance, contact the Freedom of Information (FOI) coordinator at the institution you’re requesting records from. They can help guide you through the process and provide additional information.
  8. Submit your request: Once you’ve prepared your request, submit it to the institution’s designated ATIP office. You can do this online or by mail/email, depending on the institution’s preferences.

  • Personal information requests: If you’re seeking personal information specific to yourself (e.g., medical records, police statements), you’ll need to submit a personal information request under the Privacy Act.
  • Provincial and territorial governments: Each province and territory has its own access to information law, so you may need to contact the relevant provincial or territorial government institution directly.
  • FOI coordinators are obligated to help you with your request, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you need guidance.
